Trimming: Minimal trimming is usually needed. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches after flowering to maintain a tidy shape. Avoid heavy pruning, as magnolias can be slow to recover and are best left to develop naturally.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not usually necessary, but spent flowers can be removed if desired to keep the plant looking neat.

Fertilising: Apply compost or a slow-release fertiliser for flowering trees and shrubs in spring. Avoid excessive feeding, as this can encourage soft growth at the expense of flowers.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase so the root zone stays evenly moist. Once established, Magnolia ‘Kay Parris’ benefits from watering during extended dry periods, particularly in summer.

Pest control: Magnolias are generally low maintenance, but check for scale insects and aphids on stems and new growth. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease management: Watch for leaf spot, dieback and root problems in poorly drained soils. Signs include black or brown spotting, wilting, yellowing leaves or branch decline. Remove affected growth, avoid overhead watering where possible, and ensure the soil is free draining to help prevent disease.
