Perovskia atriplicifolia
Perovskia atriplicifolia, commonly known as Russian Sage, is a beloved perennial that captivates with its airy spires of lavender-blue flowers and silvery foliage. This plant's long flowering period, from mid-summer to autumn, makes it a garden favourite. The feathery leaves provide a stunning contrast against the bold, purple flowers.
Performs best in full sun, thriving in well-drained soil conditions. It's exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for challenging garden spots. Particularly suited for cottage gardens, and contemporary landscapes, where its relaxed form and soothing hues can soften hard lines. Its height and texture make it an excellent choice for borders or as a backdrop for shorter plants.

Trimming: Cut back hard in late winter/early spring to 10-20 cm above ground to keep plants compact and prevent flopping. Lightly tip-prune in early summer if needed.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower spikes in late summer to prolong flowering and keep it tidy (leave some if you want self-seeding).
Fertilising: Generally low-feed. Apply a light dressing of compost in spring; avoid high-nitrogen fertiliser (it encourages weak, floppy growth).
Watering: Water regularly for the first season to establish. Once established, only water during prolonged dry spells; dislikes waterlogged soil.
Pest control: Usually trouble-free. Watch for aphids on soft new growth - wash off with water or use insecticidal soap if persistent.
Disease management: Root rot can occur in poorly drained soils (wilting/yellowing despite moisture). Improve drainage and avoid overwatering.
