Gaura So White
Gaura 'So White' is a tidy, upright perennial that produces clean white, four-petalled flowers from late spring through to autumn. The flowers sit on slender stems above narrow green foliage and appear over a long period, attracting bees and other pollinators. Growing to around 60 to 80 cm high and 40 to 60 cm wide, it fits well into cottage, coastal, dry, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Tolerates heat, wind, and light drought once established. Space plants 40 to 50 cm apart. Trim back lightly during the season to prolong flowering, and cut back hard in late autumn or early spring. A reliable, fuss-free plant for consistent colour in sunny garden beds.
rimming: Lightly trim after the first flush of flowers to encourage a tidy shape and repeat flowering. In late autumn or early spring, cut back the entire plant to about 10 - 15 cm above ground to promote vigorous new growth.
Deadheading: Not essential, as Gaura ‘So White’ is self-cleaning, but removing spent flower spikes can neaten the plant and extend flowering.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, which can cause weak, leggy growth at the expense of flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Gaura ‘So White’ is drought-tolerant and thrives in hot, dry conditions. Ensure well-drained soil, as it dislikes winter wet.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids may appear - treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot or fungal leaf spots. Remove any diseased or yellowing foliage promptly, and plant in free-draining soil for best results.
