Westringia fruticosa Wynabbie Gem
Westringia fruticosa Wynyabbie Gem is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub with soft, grey-green foliage and pale lavender-mauve flowers that appear almost year-round, with peak displays in spring and summer. Its dense, bushy habit and delicate flowers make it a versatile choice for hedging, screening, or mixed borders.
Perfect for coastal, native, or cottage gardens, Westringia Wynyabbie Gem thrives in full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of a wide range of well-draining soils. Highly drought-tolerant and wind-resistant, it is particularly suited to exposed or low-maintenance areas. Space plants 1–1.5 metres apart for hedging or allow room for its natural shape in informal plantings.
This hardy shrub grows to a mature height of 1.5–2 metres and a width of 1–1.5 metres, forming a rounded, easy-care shape that requires occasional pruning to maintain its form.
Trimming: Prune lightly in spring or after flowering to maintain a neat, bushy shape. For hedges or formal shapes, trim more regularly to encourage dense growth.
Deadheading: Not required, as this variety self-cleans its spent flowers.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release, low-phosphorus fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Over-fertilising is unnecessary, as Westringia thrives in low-nutrient soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Ensure soil drains well.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Inspect occasionally for aphids or scale and treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Highly resistant to disease. Avoid waterlogged soil to prevent root rot and ensure good air circulation around the plant.
