Viburnum Fullbrook

Viburnum Fullbrook is a hardy, evergreen shrub valued for its dense, dark green foliage and clusters of fragrant white flowers that appear from late winter into spring. These are often followed by small, dark berries that attract birds, adding further seasonal interest. With a compact, bushy habit reaching approximately 1.5-2 metres high and wide, it’s ideal for hedging, screening, or as a structural feature in cottage, formal, and low-maintenance garden styles.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. Tolerates a range of conditions, including light frost and coastal exposure. Space plants 80-100 cm apart for hedging or grouped planting. Prune after flowering to shape and maintain density. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering in late spring to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove spent flower heads and any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve airflow. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as Viburnum ‘Fullbrook’ flowers on the previous season’s growth.

Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower clusters after flowering can improve appearance and slightly reduce seed set.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser or composted organic matter in early spring to support strong growth and flowering. Avoid overfeeding, especially with high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of blooms.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in extended dry periods. Once established, this shrub is moderately drought-tolerant but will perform best with occasional deep watering. Ensure soil remains moist but free-draining.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though aphids may occasionally appear on new growth. Monitor regularly and treat early with insecticidal soap if required.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues such as powdery mildew or leaf spot. Remove any affected foliage promptly. Plant in well-drained soil to prevent root-related problems.
