Peony 'Duchesse de Nemours' is a timeless, heirloom variety renowned for its large, fully double, pure white flowers with a subtle hint of cream at the centre. Flowering in late spring to early summer, the delicately ruffled petals emit a sweet, citrus-like fragrance. This vigorous herbaceous peony has strong stems that support its elegant flowers, making it an excellent choice for garden display and cut arrangements. The deep green foliage remains attractive throughout the season, adding texture and contrast.
Ideal for garden beds, borders, and cut flower gardens. Adds classic beauty and fragrance to perennial plantings.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-draining soil. Space plants approximately 60 cm apart to ensure healthy growth and airflow.
Grows to around 80–90 cm tall and 60–80 cm wide.
Trimming: Cut back foliage to ground level in late autumn once it has died back to promote healthy regrowth in spring.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to keep the plant tidy and direct energy into the roots rather than seed production.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as new growth emerges. After flowering, switch to a low-nitrogen fertiliser to support root health and improve future flowering. Avoid excessive feeding, as this can reduce flowers.
Watering: Maintain consistent soil moisture during the growing season, especially in dry conditions. Deep, infrequent watering is best to encourage strong root development.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids on young shoots and treat with insecticidal soap or a strong spray of water if necessary.
Disease Management: Peonies can be susceptible to botrytis blight, which causes blackened stems and bud rot. Remove any affected plant material promptly and ensure good air circulation. Avoid overhead watering to minimise fungal issues. A copper-based fungicide can help if needed.
