Peony 'Bartzella' is a spectacular intersectional (Itoh) peony, prized for its abundant, semi-double to fully double, lemon-yellow flowers with a soft, spicy fragrance. The large flowers feature delicate red flares at their centres, creating a striking contrast. This vigorous variety produces multiple flowers per stem, extending its flowering period through late spring and early summer. Its lush, deeply divided green foliage remains attractive well into autumn, providing lasting interest in the garden.
Excellent for garden beds, borders, and feature planting. A superb choice for cut flowers and long-lasting seasonal colour.
Prefers full sun to light shade in well-draining, fertile soil. Space plants approximately 80 cm apart to allow for healthy growth and airflow.
Grows to around 90 cm tall and 90–100 cm wide.
Trimming: In late autumn, cut back foliage to ground level once it has withered. As an intersectional (Itoh) peony, ‘Bartzella’ may retain some woody stems—leave these intact if they show signs of life in spring.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to maintain a neat appearance and direct energy back into the roots.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as new growth emerges. After flowering, use a low-nitrogen fertiliser to support root health and future flowering. Avoid excessive feeding, which can reduce flower production.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season, especially in dry conditions. Deep, infrequent watering is best to encourage strong root growth.
Pest Control: Check for aphids on new shoots and treat with insecticidal soap or a strong jet of water if needed.
Disease Management: Peonies can be affected by botrytis blight, which causes blackened stems and bud rot. Remove infected areas promptly and ensure good air circulation around the plant. Avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal risks. A copper-based fungicide can help manage persistent issues.
