Notify MePeony 'Alertie' is a stunning early-season variety, producing large, soft pink, double flowers with a delicate fragrance. The ruffled petals create a full, romantic display, fading to near-white at the edges as they mature. This herbaceous peony has strong stems that hold the flowers upright, making it an excellent choice for cut arrangements. Lush, dark green foliage provides a striking contrast, remaining attractive throughout the season.
Ideal for garden beds, borders, and cottage gardens. Perfect for cut flowers and adding seasonal interest.
Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-draining, fertile soil. Ensure adequate spacing of approximately 60 cm apart to allow for airflow and healthy growth.
Grows to around 80–90 cm tall and 60–80 cm wide.
Trimming: Cut back foliage to ground level in late autumn after it has died back. This encourages healthy regrowth in spring.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers promptly to direct energy back into the roots rather than seed production.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as new growth emerges, and a low-nitrogen fertiliser after flowering to support root development. Avoid excessive feeding, as this can reduce flowering.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season, especially in dry periods. Peonies prefer deep, infrequent watering rather than frequent light watering.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids on new shoots and treat with insecticidal soap or a strong spray of water.
Disease Management: Peonies can be prone to botrytis blight, which causes blackened stems and bud rot. Remove affected areas promptly and ensure good air circulation. Avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal issues. A copper-based fungicide can help if problems persist."
