Coprosma prostrata

Coprosma prostrata is a low-growing, mat-forming native shrub with small, glossy green leaves and a dense, spreading habit. Its fine texture and ground-hugging form make it ideal for erosion control, rockeries, retaining walls, and native or coastal gardens.

Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates wind, salt spray, and light frost once established. Requires minimal maintenance-light trimming can help maintain a neat form. Space plants 50 to 70 centimetres apart for groundcover use.

Spreads to around 1 metre wide and grows up to 30 centimetres tall.

Trimming: Trim lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage dense, low growth. Remove any sprawling or damaged stems as needed throughout the year.

Deadheading: Not necessary, as the small flowers are not a main feature.

Fertilising: Apply a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser in spring. Additional feeding is usually not required unless grown in poor soils.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally check for scale or aphids and treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if they appear.

Disease Management: Very low risk of disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, and remove any discoloured or dead growth to keep the plant healthy.
