Hebe albicans

Hebe albicans is a compact, hardy native bush featuring grey-blue foliage. White flower spikes in early summer are a favourite of bees. Great on banks and slopes. Great coastal plant. Evergreen. Hardy.

Trimming: Lightly trim Hebe albicans after flowering to maintain a compact, tidy shape and encourage dense new growth. Avoid cutting hard into old woody stems, as hebes may not reshoot well from bare wood.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads after flowering to keep the plant looking neat and to encourage further fresh growth. This is especially useful for plants grown as low borders or compact specimens.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support healthy foliage and seasonal flowering. Avoid heavy feeding, as too much fertiliser can produce soft growth that is more vulnerable to pests and disease.

Watering: Water regularly while establishing, particularly through the first summer. Once established, Hebe albicans is reasonably drought tolerant, but will benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells or extreme heat.

Pest Control: Check occasionally for aphids, scale, or mealybugs, especially on soft new growth. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, and prune out heavily affected tips if needed.

Disease Management: Watch for root rot, leaf spot, or downy mildew in damp, poorly ventilated, or poorly drained conditions. Signs include yellowing leaves, brown or black spotting, wilting, or dieback. Remove affected foliage, improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and ensure the soil drains freely.
