Feijoa Tagan
Feijoa Tagan is a productive evergreen feijoa grown for its flavoursome, aromatic fruit and attractive grey-green foliage. In late spring to early summer it produces showy red and white flowers with edible petals, followed by medium to large fruit that ripen in Autumn. Its dense habit also makes it a great choice for screening while delivering a reliable home harvest.
Ideal for edible, coastal, or cottage garden styles, Tagan grows best in full sun and well-drained soil, and tolerates wind and light coastal conditions once established. Water regularly while young and during prolonged dry spells to support flowering and fruiting. Space plants 2-3 m apart, and for best fruit set plant with another feijoa variety nearby.
Mature size: Reaches around 3-4 m in height and 2-3 m in width, forming a dense, upright shrub or small tree.
Trimming: Prune lightly after fruiting to shape the plant and maintain an open structure, which improves air circulation and light penetration. Remove any dead, damaged, or inward-growing branches. For hedging, trim lightly in late summer to maintain a dense form.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. A second feed in mid-summer can support flowering and fruit development, especially in nutrient-poor soils.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and throughout flowering and fruiting. Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant but produces better fruit with consistent moisture. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring well-drained soil.
Pest Control: Monitor for scale and guava moth in fruit-producing regions. Use insecticidal soap for minor pest issues and consider fruit protection nets or traps where guava moth is present.
Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant. Ensure good airflow and avoid prolonged soil saturation to prevent root issues. Remove fallen fruit and leaves to reduce disease risk and maintain plant health.
